In Germany, the oligarch and Putin’s confidante Alischer Usmanow was raided, German media reported. It concerns the suspicion of tax evasion in the millions – the multibillionaire is also said to have paid a company out of frozen assets.
Detectives and tax inspectors began a large-scale search on Wednesday morning, during which several residential and business premises of the oligarch were searched. According to the authorities, a total of 24 objects in Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg would be searched. There are 250 officers on duty.
Income not declared to the tax authorities
The Munich detectives declined to give any information about the identity of the accused Russian. As reported by Bayerischer Rundfunk, it is Usmanov, who is said to be a supporter of Russian President Vladimir Putin. According to the broadcaster, the oligarch often stayed in Rottach-Egern for a long time. According to insiders, he was obliged to report his income to the tax authorities. Because he didn’t, he may have evaded millions of taxes.
Company paid with frozen funds?
According to the prosecutor, the accused Russian citizen had his properties in Upper Bavaria guarded by a security company, even after he was placed on the EU sanctions list on February 28. By paying for these security services, he violated the ban on having frozen assets. The four other suspects are accused of aiding and fomenting the offense by providing or assisting in the provision of security services and receiving payment.
The prosecutor’s office declined to provide any further information. According to the “Spiegel”, the property is also owned by Usmanow on the Tegernsee.
