China’s head of state Xi Jinping describes Russia in Moscow as a “great neighbour”. In reality, the multi-day state visit is Beijing’s aid to the isolated Kremlin.
Because the division of roles between Xi and Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin is clear. “Both speak of a strategic partnership,” says expert Alexander Dubowy in the interview with “Krone”. “But we are still a long way from that. Russia is China’s supplier and buyer.” Putin knows that too, and was correspondingly nervous when he spoke to Xi, tapping his feet and grabbing his left knee several times.
Political scientist: ‘China wants a stable Putin regime’
The visit itself – and the duration – is China’s concession to Russia. They indicate that Moscow is not isolated. But China is not doing it for free. Aside from trade deals favorable to Beijing, Xi will also leave with some political promises: “China wants a stable Putin regime and not a pro-Western government in the Kremlin. Not even in the future. And sooner or later Moscow will have to coordinate all geopolitical decisions with Beijing – and the Kremlin doesn’t like that at all,” says Dubovy.
Russia’s loss of respect is immense. “Turkey, China and India do not see Russia as the spokesperson for the global non-West. Before 2022, that was not the case on this scale.” The longer the war in Ukraine lasts, the tighter China’s grip on Moscow will become.
Woman disrupts video of a safe Putin world
Speaking of the war in Ukraine, when Putin visited the southeastern Ukrainian city of Mariupol last weekend, the Kremlin briefly lost control of the images. On a video that Putin had to show in an informal conversation with residents, a woman was suddenly heard screaming: “It’s all lies, it’s all show!”
