The referee of the derby Betis-Seville of the Cup that had to be suspended last season because of a stick thrown from the Villamarín stand and hitting Joan Jordán in the head, Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxeaadmitted that he suffered pressure from both clubs to suspend the clash in the case of Sevilla and continue playing in the opinion of Betis.
‘I told them they didn’t have to tell me what happened because I saw it with my own eyes. The Sevilla players told me they were a bit out of the game because of what happened, because of his partner, because they didn’t know what their situation was at that time”, explained the referee in a documentary series aired on ‘Prime Video’.
De Burgos Bengoetxea continued stating that in the following minutes “there was a lot of pressure. You can’t make a decision for yourself, you have to listen, see the environment… so in such a complex situation we all decided to go to the locker room to, more calmly, without any kind of external pressure, make, not the best decision, but the right one.”
