The Belfast Giants have confirmed that defender Patrick Mullen will not join the club due to an unexpected change in ‘personal circumstances’.
Mullen, who made a huge impression on the Giants team in the 2019/20 campaign before the Covid-19 pandemic season was winding down, signed for a second time again.
But a Massachusetts native who played NCAA Division One hockey at the University of Denver and enjoyed himself in Sweden and Germany won’t make it to Belfast now.

Stina Line Belfast Giants said in a statement: “The team has been working on contracts to bring Mullen to Belfast since he signed last month.
“However, the change in personal circumstances now means that he is no longer able to travel.”
Commenting on the announcement, Mullen said: “I was thrilled to be back in Belfast and helping the Giants for an exciting and important part of the season.
“Unfortunately, unexpected changes in my personal circumstances mean that it will be impossible.
“It’s very frustrating for me, the team and the coaches at this final stage of the season.
“While I cannot support the team as I expected, I will cheer them on as they continue to race for an exciting title and wish them well.
“It is an honor to wear the shirt in Belfast and the team should be proud to do so by delivering this season.”
The Giants, who are one point ahead of the Sheffield Steelers, who are in charge of 4 games, face a double header in Sheffield.
