The City of Martorell was recently designated as European City of Sport in 2023 of the Association of European Capitals and Cities of Sport (ACES Europe). Among the many sports activities that the municipality is preparing for next year will stage the start of the 102nd edition of Volta, a fact that has not happened in the city since 1994.
The history of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya and the city of Martorell dates back to the 55th (1975) and 74th (1994) editions of the race. In 1975, Martorell experienced a phase of arrival in the city, starting in Manresa, which was resolved with the victory of the Italian Pierino Gavazzi.
And on the same day, the second sector of the stage was also played with a time trial starting in Martorell and arriving in Terrassa, with the victory of the Italian Fausto Bertoglio, with a emblematic exit from the Pont del Diable.
Surprisingly, another precedent also has a marked Italian accent, because in 1994 the stage with the start and finish in Martorell ended with victory for Massimo Donatti, from the Mercatone Uno team.
After almost 30 years, the Volta returns to Martorell on March 25, 2023, with the start of the stage that will bring together the best cycling in the world in the city, in a year full of events and sports activities for the population of Baix Llobregat.

We continue to show that Martorell is a good example of how sport can be put at the service of health, social cohesion, education and culture”, said the Mayor of Martorell, Xavier Fonollosa.

I am sure that the start of the Volta will be one of the main events of this dedication, with the presence of the best teams and cyclists in the world in Martorell”, declared the president of Volta ciclista a Catalunya, Rubèn Peris.
The 102nd edition of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya will be held from March 20 to 26, 2023, and the 18 best teams in the world, the UCI WorldTeams, and 7 invited teams from the UCI ProTeams category will participate.
The final winner of the test was the Colombian Sergio Higuita (Bora-Hansgrohe), who was joined on the podium by the Ecuadorian Richard Carapaz (INEOS) and the Portuguese Joao Almeida (UAE Team).
