France plans to spend around 1.8 billion public money for the Olympics

Date:

Emmanuel Macron this Thursday brings together the main ministers and local representatives involved in the organization of the 2024 Olympic Games, including the mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgoand the president of the Île-de-France region, Valerie Pecresse, who regretted not being invited to an earlier meeting. It was also called Benoit Payanmayor of Marseille, where sailing competitions will take place.

Inflation, linked to the energy crisis, will be one of the issues to be discussed at this new meeting, which has control over the budget of Solideo, the public company that oversees the construction projects of the Paris Olympic Committee. The Government will propose to local authorities that they finance two-thirds of this increase, estimated at 150 million euros. In total, the State now plans to spend about 1,800 million euros of public money, 300 more than the first estimate.

On the northern outskirts of the capital, in Saint-Denis, the Olympic Village is being built. 80% of all infrastructure is built in that area. Pharaonic works, with more than 3,000 homes and a budget reaching 6,800 million euros. The project, however, aroused some critical voices, because an area containing more than 20 companies, three schools, a hotel, a student residence and a home for foreign workers will be demolished.
