Italian coach Devis Mangia has been sacked as coach by the Malta Football Federation after receiving a report of “an alleged breach of their federal rules”.
According to Italian newspaper La Repubblica, Mangia has been accused of sexual harassment by one of his players. “The fact is that more than one player raised the problem. There is also a precedent because he had a similar problem at Ascoli (from Serie B) in the 2015-16 season,” the aforementioned Italian newspaper detailed.
The Maltese Federation stated in its press release that Mangia, 48, “has made himself fully available for the examination of the facts.”
The Federation further clarified that “it will not make any further comments until the next steps are discussed within the respective decision-making bodies, in an open and transparent manner.”
Devis Mangia, who has been Malta’s coach since 2019, previously coached Palermo in Serie A in the 2011-12 season.
His assistant replaced him on Tuesday against Israel
Italian Davide Mazzotta, Mangia’s assistant, also led the Maltese team in Tuesday’s friendly against Israel which ended in a 2-1 win. “The players dedicated the win to Manga,” Mazzotta said.
