Fernando Alonso (Alpine), double Formula One world champion, told EFE this Thursday at the Marina Bay circuit, venue for the Singapore Grand Prix, the seventeenth of the year, that his “main goal is to help his team in any way he can” to secure fourth place “in the constructors’ championship”, which is behind Red Bull, Ferrari and Mercedes.
“You have to race by race for the rest of the World Cup. But my main goal is to help Alpine as much as possible in the Constructors’ World Championship, which is very tight with McLaren (fifth in the standings, with 107 points, 18 less than Alpine). And now there will be weekends when they will be faster; and so on where we are. But for me this is the great priority, to help the team in the remaining races,” the Asturian double world champion answered Efe in his meeting with the media that took place this Thursday at the Singapore circuit.
“Then, we will go race by race,” said Alonso, 41, world champion in 2005 and 2006 (with Renault), who has 32 wins in F1 and next year will be the driver of Aston Martin, a team on who will replace German Sebastian Vettel, who will retire.
“It would be nice to have some options, if any of the cars in front have problems, to try to get closer to the podium. That would be fantastic,” Alonso replied to Efe in Marina Bay. “But for this we need help from the cars ahead of us,” he added.
