Turkey bans visiting team spectators at Istanbul derbies

Date:

The derbies in between the three big football teams in Istanbul, the GalatasarayThe Fenerbahçe and the Besiktas, will be played without spectators from the away teama proposal announced this Thursday by the Turkish authorities.

The decision has been made”at the request of the clubs themselves“, whose leaders requested this proposal in a meeting with the authorities in early August, the Istanbul Governor’s office said in a statement.

Prohibition of the reception of the fans of a rival team refers only to matches between those three clubs, and not affecting the other two teams in the city, Basaksehirwho won the Turkish Super League in 2020, but almost no followers, and The Istanbulsporwhich this year returned to the first division after almost two decades in the lower category.

recent event

Besiktas hosts Fenerbahçe this Sunday, and on Wednesday night there was already an incident when two dozen supporters of the away team gathered with flares outside the rival’s facility..

Some of the fans brandished bladed weapons and others launched flares, cutting off traffic and eventually confronting a group of Besiktas supporters who flocked to the scene.

Adding to the traditional rivalry between the clubs is the recent shirt change of Belgian striker Michy Batshuayi, formerly of Chelsea and Valencia, who played last season for Besiktas and is now at Fenerbahçe.

In a survey on social networks proposed by the Turkish sports newspaper Fotospor, eight out of ten readers spoke against the measure of preventing the entry of fans of the rival team.
