The fourth pole of the year in the intermediate category at the GP of the Americas was taken to COTA in Austin by a rookie in the competitions, the American Cameron Beaubier, a rider who made a round trip to the World Championship, from the Red Bull Rookies Cup and 125cc World Championship, to coming home and competing in the MotoAmerica Superbikes and with five titles in his pocket, returning to the Moto2 World Championship in 2021.
Many thought at the beginning of qualification was strategically looking for good tires, especially that of young Fermín Aldeguer who hurried and decided to be the last to leave the box. The first reference time was established by Celestino Vietti, who came in Q1 (2’09 ”091) and Augusto Fernández, who was on the pole breaking time, fell on turn 17 and Fermín Aldeguer, who was next to him, had to i -abort.
This is the first of the yellow flags to appear since the fall, which has since been endless.
Tony Arbolino (turn 8) drove two yellow flags in sectors 4 and 2 midway through qualifying and many laps have already been canceled. And to finish another crash on turn 11 at Ai Ogura, he endangered the session by staying in the middle of the bike and the Japanese rider warning his rivals with a new yellow flag in sector 2.
Vietti, Canet and Beaubier remained in those moments in the first provisional row with only three minutes to go. The American hit his fifth lap with a new circuit record with a 2’08 ”751, breaking the 2016 Rins pole record (2’08” 850).
At this stage of forcing Q2 Arón Canet came to consolidate the front row and fell to the triple right (turn 17) and Q2 ended for him the Moto3 winner of 2019 although no one beat him.
Local Beaubier and the two strong men of the Moto2 World Championship, Vietti and Canet, will start in the front row and from second Arbolino along with Arenas and Dixon; from the third Jorge Navarro with Fermín Aldeguer, heavily affected by the yellow flags, and Sam Lowes and from the fourth Pedro Acosta, also affected by the flags, along with Ogura and Bendsneyder.
Marcos Ramírez will start on 14th, Jeremy Alcoba 15th and Augusto Fernández 18th without time confirmed.
