The greatest tragedy in football history

The history of football, unfortunately, is dotted great tragedies in stadiums on five continents. The events recorded on Sunday in Indonesia, which resulted in almost 200 deaths, added a chapter to this long relationship.

Some sources point out that the one in Indonesia is, according to the number of victims, the second largest in history of soccer. These are some of the ones that took the most human victims, in order.

74 dead in Egypt

In Port Said there was a mass attack by Al-Masry supporters against players and fans of the opposing team that left 74 dead and more than 1,000 injured.

129 dead in Accra (Ghana)

The Ohene Djan Stadium was the scene of a tragedy when fans began throwing chairs and bottles onto the field, prompting the intervention of the police, who resorted, as in Indonesia, to the use of tear gas to try to stop the erosion caused by the panic.

43 victims in Johannesburg

During a match between Kaizer Chiefs and the Orlando Pirates, there was overcrowding at the Ellis Park stadium resulting in an avalanche of tragic outcomes.

October 16, 1996

84 died in Guatemala

84 people died, most of them suffocated and crushed, when an avalanche of fans tried to enter the Mateo Flores stadium to watch the Guatemala-Costa Rica qualifying match for the World Cup in France. In previous days, more tickets were sold than seats in the stadium and this caused a large crowd to force the field accesses into the stands when they were already full, causing crushing.

96 dead in Sheffield

A match between Nottingham Forest and Liverpool, in Hillsborough, ended in tragedy when the precariousness of the facilities and the overcrowding of the stands caused an avalanche that claimed almost 100 victims.

39 victims in Heysel

The preview of the European Cup final between Liverpool and Juventus claimed the lives of 39 people when an attack by English hooligans on Italian fans led to a brawl and the subsequent deadly avalanche. More than 600 spectators were injured.

56 dead in Bradford

During a match between local Bradford City and Lincoln City, a fire broke out in the stands which would lead to the ejection of many of those in attendance, ending their lives.

October 20, 1982

66 died in Moscow

On that occasion, the cause of the tragedy occurred after a human stampede was recorded during the match between Moscow’s Spartak and HFC Haarlem, which left sixty-one more injured.

January 2, 1971

66 dead at Ibrox Park

The Glasgow stadium was the scene, during a derby between Rangers and Celtic, of a human stampede which, in addition to the long list of casualties, left a trail of more than 200 injured.

June 23, 1968

71 dead in Buenos Aires

The rivalry between River Plate and Boca Juniors ended in drama when at the end of the match the exit that was supposed to be used by Boca fans was closed, causing many victims, many of them minors, due to crushing .

328 victims in Lima

Various incidents between Peru and Argentina fans led the Police to use tear gas to try to end them, causing avalanches that caused the number of casualties put by some sources which is more than 400.

November 6, 1955

152 dead in Naples

A meeting between the local team and Bologna ended in all kinds of clashes between Neapolitan supporters and security forces that caused the tragedy. Events were kicked off by a penalty called in favor of Bologna.
