Indonesia announces independent investigation into soccer tragedy

The government of Indonesia announced on Monday the opening of an independent investigation to clarify the tragedy that occurred on Saturday at a soccer field, where at least 125 people died after a stampede caused by clashes between police and fans.

“The Police the perpetrators involved in criminal activities should be immediately exposed,” said Minister of Security, Mahfud MDadded that “they will take action” against those responsible and claimed the Police to “review your security procedures”.

mahfud He also indicated that the authorities are investigating the authenticity of the videos published about what happened where the security officials “went beyond themselves and acted outside their authority.”

The team of investigators – which includes heads of ministries, professional soccer players, organizers of sporting events, media professionals and academics – will be formed in the next 24 hours and will be coordinated by the Minister of Security.

This investigation is expected to conclude “between 2 or 3 weeks,” said the portfolio head.

Thousands of fans of the club Arema burst onto the pitch on Saturday after a 2-3 loss to Persebaya Surabaya at the stadium Kanjuruhan from the city of Unfortunatelyin the province of East Javaand clashed with security forces, causing 125 deaths so far -including 17 minors- and more than 320 injuries.

The angry crowd attacked the police and destroyed various infrastructures of the sports center, as well as fifteen vehicles, in an outbreak of violence described by the police as “anarchic”.

Security officials responded with tear gas in an attempt to stop the attacks, which stunned fans and sparked a stampede.

Most of the victims died of suffocation, trauma or being trampled, according to hospital sources.

Following the tragedy, the Indonesian league temporarily suspended all scheduled matches in the competition.
