The Ryder Cup, this Tuesday at the Colosseum and Wednesday at the Vatican

The Ryder Cup captains Luke Donald and Zach Johnsonled two groups of junior and disabled golfers from the Italian elite team on Tuesday in a special Captains Challenge held at Marco Simone Golf & Country Clubheadquarters of Ryder Cup 2023 (September 29-October 1).

The friendly competition launched the festival of Ryder Cup yearkick off two days of activities in Rome to mark 12 months until the biennial competition visits Italy for the first time.

European Captain Donald and US Captain Johnson will make their first joint appearance since their respective appointments, with a series of activities scheduled by historic city of rome.

Around 300 students from the area witnessed the Captains’ Challenge, which ended, unsurprisingly, in a draw between the two teams, who shared the trophy with two points each.

“Legacy is a really important part of the Ryder Cup. Holding the Ryder in this country will help spark interest in the game and encourage a new generation to play golf. We’ve seen some incredible golf from player today. It’s a fantastic way to start this week,” said European captain Donald.

“The Ryder Cup is a huge event in the world of golf. It’s our biggest team event, attracting audiences who don’t even play golf because of the great rivalry and history. So today is a great way to start the Year .” and tell people how amazing the Ryder Cup is.” He added.

Meanwhile, Johnson said: “It’s a fun day. It’s something different, something different. I think the beauty of this game and the Ryder Cup is that it’s a year before we get to play golf with kids who They like the game, and we can show it in a cool way.”

Activities include a photo session with the captains shooting at the Colosseum this Tuesday, followed by a private audience with Pope Francis tomorrow Wednesday at the Vatican. The organizing committee also wants an audience with the Pope during Ryder Cup week, too. “But that won’t be easy with 24 players,” a spokesman said.

The Marco Simone will be the third continental European venue to host the Ryder Cup after Valderrama (Spain) in 1997 and Le Golf National in Paris (France) in 2018. “We expect to host 280,000 spectators throughout the week, including the practice rounds, even reaching 50,000 per day,” said Gian Paolo Motali, CEO. Those numbers could reach 270,000 at Le Golf National, in 2018.
