the american pilot Skyler Howes (Husqvarna Factory Racing), is the new leader of the general classification of the Morocco Rally on motorcycles after Monday’s dispute of the second stage, between Tan Tan and El Aaiún.
The victory in the second stage went to the Frenchman Adrien van Beveren (Monster Energy Honda), who wrote his name in the history of his new brand, Honda, signing his first victory at the wheel of the golden wing signature motorcycle in his first race with his new team. He did so ahead of Argentine Kevin Benavides (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) and American Ricky Brabec (Monster Energy Honda Team), finishing 2:54 and 3:01 minutes behind the French.
After the stage, Skyler Howes was placed at the head of the general classification, a position in which he ousted the Botswana Ross Branch (Hero Motorsports), after finishing the day in fourth place. He was 1:40 ahead of Australian Toby Price (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing), who finished sixth on Monday. Argentine Luciano Benavides put his Husqvarna on the provisional podium in 3:42 minutes.
Stage winner Adrien Van Beveren was fourth overall on two wheels, 3:59 behind Howes.
After his first victory on his Honda, the rider from the north of France commented: “Winning a stage in a World Championship race is always a good feeling. I did the navigation well and then I came out at the end of the stage. With Sam (Sunderland) and Ricky (Brabec) we rode together almost as a team to the finish line. Great to win, but now it’s time to get back on track for tomorrow where I have to lead for everyone .”
Ross Branch, winner of Saturday’s prologue and Sunday’s first stage, finished Monday in twelfth place, more than three minutes behind Van Beveren, and in the general classification he dropped to sixth place, 4:33 behind by Howes.
This Tuesday will be the third of five stages of the race. There will be 323 total kilometers and 89 special, starting and ending in El Aaiun.
