Alcaraz: “I couldn’t adapt and Goffin was superior”

Date:

Carlos Alcaraz, who in his debut as world number 1 lost this Tuesday against the Belgian David Goffinin the first round of the Astana tournament, did not hesitate to admit that he was not “adapted” to the court and that his rival “became superior”.

“It was a difficult game. David played well. Coming back to the competition is never easy, he has played two games on this court, which is not the easiest to get used to. It is very slow and it is complicated. -adapted and it became superior”, commented Alcaraz after the match, in statements provided by the ATP.

Goffin, who succumbed to Alcaraz in the previous precedent between the two (Melbourne 2021, by double 6-3), this time defeated the Spanish 7-5 and 6-3, on the Nur-Sultán indoor court.

“(Goffin) He’s played a lot and he’s got a lot of experience. He played very aggressively and I couldn’t handle the pressure he was putting on me. It’s something I have to learn, I have to remember the lesson from this game.” added Alcaraz.

The Murcian, also, in his social networks was saddened by his defeat: “Of course, this is not the result I wanted, but we have to keep working! Thank you Astana for the support!”

The Spanish tennis player, playing his first match since leading the world ranking (ATP), in the next list, which will be official next Monday after the end of the tournament, will see his points drop from 6,740 to 6,460, but number 1 will be retained.

Rafa Nadal, in second place, and absent this week from tournaments, is second with 5,810 points; while Norwegian Casper Ruud, also absent, will remain in third position with 4,930.
