The owners of portland thorn Y Chicago Red Stars They announced a few hours ago that they are stepping down from the management of these two teams after a report was published on Monday that described systematic abuse of Women’s Professional Soccer League players (NWSL).
These are Merritt Paulson (Thorns) and Arnim Whisler (Red Stars), two names that appeared in that report as accessories to these abusive practices.
“I cannot apologize enough for our role in an egregious, systematic failure to protect player safety and for the missteps we took. I am truly sorry,” Paulson said in a statement.
For his part, Whisler said in a similar statement that he felt “deeply” what the players “experienced during their time in Chicago.” “I recognize that my current presence (at the club) is a distraction,” he added.
In response to those press releases, NWSL Commissioner Jessica Berman said Paulson and Whisler’s decisions were “important steps” to change the league.
Both owners will no longer be in charge of the day-to-day and management of their respective clubs, but so far they have not said whether or not they will sell the clubs.
