The 2024 Paris Olympics marathon pass in front of Palace of Versaillesbetween departure and arrival in the capital, and will offer a particularly difficult route, as the organizers announced on Wednesday.
After leaving the Hôtel de Ville and a few kilometers along the banks of the Seine, the route crosses the department of Hauts-de-Seine (Boulogne-Billancourt, Sèvres, Ville-d’Avray) to the Palace of Versailles ( Yvelines). Runners will pass through the Hauts-de-Seine (Viroflay, Chaville, Meudon, Issy-les-Moulineaux) to reach the Seine and Paris and head to the Esplanade des Invalides, finishing at km 42.195.
The route is particularly demanding, with several hills for a drop of 438 m, greater than most current major marathons.
The route, completely different from the Paris marathon held every year, will be used three times, for the men’s race, the women’s event and for the “marathon for all”, which will be held during the Games and open on over 20,000 novice runners.
“We want to connect this icon of the Games with a great challenge of our time, equality between women and men,” organizing committee president Tony Estanguet said at a press conference in Paris. The route was inspired by the October 1789 “women’s march” from Paris to Versailles, an event of the French Revolution.
