The Spanish Open usually starts despite the protests

Date:

The claim of the group of climate activists Rebelión or Extinción, which covered several holes in the Club de Campo de Villa de Madrid with cement, they did not prevent the Spanish Open from starting normally that has been debated since this Thursday and that has the participation of Jon Rahm.

The first scheduled match between the Dutch Daan Huizing, the Spaniard Eduardo De la Riva and the Czech Ondrej Lieser started on time from hole 1 despite a minor incident arising from the action of the activists.

Members of this social movement dedicated to combating the climate crisis that reached Spain in 2019 took action in the early hours of Thursday to sabotage three holes of the Madrid golf course, where they put up a banner that read “this hole has swallowed 100,000 liters of water today”.

In this act of sabotage, activists want to point out “the irresponsibility and cynicism of an elite who have not even taken the initiative in the hottest summer on recordaccording to the State Meteorological Agency, and make small concessions such as watering their golf courses,” they explained in statements to EFE.

The organization proceeded to fix the holes and removed the banner and the tournament started normally at the scheduled time as planned.
