5% of footballers in premier league and the English Football League (EFL) had suicidal thoughts throughout his sports career. A survey conducted by the Football Players Union of England (PFA, for its acronym in English), revealed that 40 of the 843 footballers who underwent this study had at some point considered quitting their own lives.
The study also points out that almost 10% of players have suffered ‘bullying’ throughout their career, that 12% have felt forced to get vaccinated against covid and almost 20% have experienced anxiety. “These figures show how important these issues are to the sport,” Michael Bennett, director of footballer welfare at the PFA, told The Associated Press.
The survey was conducted among players from the Premier League to the Fourth Division during the 2021/2022 season.
On ‘bullying’, Bennett explained that it could come from one’s own teammates, the coaching staff or the board. “We are particularly concerned about the transfer markets, because we know that players can be alienated by a club when they try to force a transfer. We have to deal with cases of this very often. Players have the right to feel of protected in their place. of work,” he added.
