Injection of 16 million per year to prepare for Paris’2024

Date:

The new programs of Team Spain, launched by the Higher Sports Council (CSD) with the aim of promoting the preparation and results of the next Olympic and Paralympic Games, will cover the athletes in the year 2022 more than sixty different specialty of almost forty Spanish Sports Federations ( FFDDEE).

Outdoor track, walking and athletics route; rhythmic and artistic gymnastics; water polo; track, road, freestyle and adapted cycling; mountain climbing and skiing; Olympic rowing; canoeing in slalom, calm water and paracanoe; or triathlon and paratriathlon are some of the 66 different specialties that Team Spain will promote through the 36 beneficiary Federations of the program this year.

“Team Spain’s programs have come to revolutionize the Olympic and Paralympic preparation of our athletes” underlined the president of the CSD, José Manuel Franco. “An ambitious and exciting project that shows the Government’s firm commitment to all sports and its enormous power to project Spain’s image to the world.” In his recollection, this new project aims to “surpass the results of Barcelona 92, whose medal table continues to be the glass ceiling of our Olympism” and “maintain Spain in the benchmarks of Paralympic sport at an international level” .

To this end, the Council of Ministers approved on October 4 a new injection of 16 million euros for 2022, from a total of 48 million for the rest of the Olympic cycle. A budget safeguarded by Viana Pacts funds -revenue obtained from the commercialization of professional football audiovisual rights- and will be distributed through the FFDDEE according to the technical criteria established by a CSD evaluation commission.

Among the requirements, the Team Spain Elite program will consider athletes and teams with objective possibilities to achieve a place in the top eight at the Olympic Games and a podium at the Paralympic Games, according to previous results in national and international competitions. And the Team Spain Strategic Interest program -aiming at non-Olympic but mainly specialties in projecting Spain’s image- will support the development of an elite base based on specific projects presented by their Federations.

In any case, the additional allocation of resources for the FFDDEE included in the programs of Team Spain will require a joint agreement of the objectives of the highest level of sports, thus a finalist and specific funding, adapted to individual needs of athletes and teams.
