He was run over during the final race of the SSP300 Superbike Championship at Portimao circuit last Saturday and died in hospital three days later.
Young Dutch driver Victor Steeman, 22, died on Tuesday evening as a result of injuries sustained in an accident at the Portimao circuit in Portugal’s Algarve last Saturday. Steeman was competing in the final World Superbike race in the SSP300 category when he was run over by another bike and suffered serious injuries that killed him three days later.
“Something has happened that we have always feared as parents of a motorcycle racer. Our Victor couldn’t win his last race. Despite the unbearable loss and pain, we are proud to share that our hero, in his death, was able to save five other people as an organ donor. We would like to thank everyone who has been there over the past few days. We are going to miss Victor very much,” the family of the ill-fated pilot said in a statement.
Steeman, a Kawasaki rider, lost control of his motorcycle in a corner and another rider arriving hit him, causing polytrauma and several head injuries. He was treated at the track and rushed by helicopter to a hospital in Faro, but doctors were unable to save him. Steeman appeared in the final race of the SSP300 championship with mathematical possibilities for the title, which was eventually won by Spaniard Álvaro Díaz.
Steeman’s death comes less than a week after 26-year-old British Superbike rider Chrissy Rouse died of a head injury on October 6 after being hit by another rider during a race at Donington Circuit Park, England.
