The candidates were chosen by a panel of experts from six continental athletics areas to compete for the award in a popular poll that began this week online, open to fans from around the world until October 31 and which is leaving five finalists.
The performance at the outdoor World Championships in Eugene (Oregon, USA) and the indoor track championships in Belgrade, as well as at the one-day athletic meeting were decisive in the selection of candidates. The winner will be announced in early December.
The ten finalists are, in alphabetical order:
– Christian Ceh (Slovenia). World champion and of the Discus Diamond League. European runner-up and author of a launch of 71.27 m, a national record.
– Alison Dos Santos (Brazil). World and Diamond League champion in the 400m hurdles. He broke the South American record with 46.29.
– Armand Duplantis (Sweden). World champion (outdoors and indoor), European and Diamond League pole vault champion. He broke his world record three times with jumps of 6.19 and 6.20 (indoors) and 6.21 (outdoors).
– Soufiane El Bakkali (Morocco). World and Diamond League champion of 3,000 m obstacles. Unbeaten in 2022 and best world record of the year with 7:58.28.
– Grant Holloway (USA.). World champion of the 110 and 60 m hurdles, in addition to winning the Diamond League in his trial.
– Jakob Ingebrigtsen (Norway). World champion in the 5,000 and runner-up in the 1,500. European Champion of 1,500 and 5,000. Diamond League 1,500 champion with best world record of the year (3:29.02)
– Eliud Kipchoge (Kenya). Berlin marathon winner with a new world record (2h01:09). Winner of the Tokyo Marathon.
– Noah Lyles (USA.). World and Diamond League champion 200 meters. Best world record of the year with 19.31, third all time.
– Anderson Peters (Grenada). World and Commonwealth javelin champion. Best world record of the year with 93.07 meters which places him fifth in the all-time ranking.
– Peter Paul Pichardo (Portugal). Outdoor triple world champion with the best world record of the year (17.95), European champion and world indoor runner-up.
