Victory for Balearic rider at Phillip Island to be crowned Moto3 World Champion
Exhibition, victory and Moto3 title for Izan Guevara in a race in which he never speculated. He didn’t need to win to take the title, especially when his main rival, Italy’s Foggia, missed the entire race, but the Spaniard wanted to celebrate a championship from the top of the podium and make magic in a race now history. At the age of 18, Izan Guevara becomes the 23rd Spanish champion in history and gives national motorcycling his 56th title.
The Moto3 race started five minutes late to give the tarmac time to dry after a cloud dumped water on Phillip Island early in the morning. However, when the lights went out, there was still a patch of water left, which made the early laps particularly difficult. From seventh on the grid, Guevara went through the first few laps steadily so as not to make any mistakes. Ahead, his teammate, Sergio García, who still had mathematical chances to become champion, was in the lead and fired. His chances lay in winning the race and waiting.
García’s strong pace broke up the group, taking only three riders at his wheel: Turk Öncü, Japan’s Sasaki and Guevara who took the most advantage of the situation, as the fewer riders ahead of him, the fewer problems he had. The podium was worth it and from the board the team led by Jorge Martínez Aspar asked him to calm down and get up. However, Guevara had other plans at the end of the race and went on the attack on the last lap to finish a clear round. With his speed change, he didn’t give his rivals any options, showing that he was the best in the category this year, taking the title on the first change and with two races to spare. García’s third position gave him the only consolation that he overtakes Foggia in the standings and will now seek second place to sign a season that would be historic for the Valencian team.
