The pride of Alcantarilla and regional basketball

Date:

The Hozono Global Jairis will play the first match in the history of the women’s top category on Murcian soil from 8pm today

In the Hozono Global Jairis, they had to wait for the third day for their first competition in the highest category to finally take place in the warmth of their people. But what are three days, if there is a 68-year history behind it, that of the oldest regional basketball club, currently more than recognizable by its aurinegro colors, but which bears in its name the amalgam of colors with which it 1954 was founded under the name Iris, for the different colors of that team that played on the land. Today, and on parquet, Alcantarilla finally has its big day. The Fausto Vicent is organizing its first competition at the highest national level and a full house is expected in the same pavilion that witnessed the promotion party in its last competition.

From then until now, a summer of “a lot of work to make it all happen,” sums up the president, Salva Costa. But there is much more behind it. And it’s that Jairis had to suffer until he could live up to an appointment like tonight at 8pm, one that might have arrived sooner if that administrative descent in 2016, from the Women’s League 2 to the 1st Division, inter-autonomous category, for late submission of a bank guarantee. That year, the girls still being trained by Víctor Verdú, the house’s historic coach, had finished fifth.

Last year, the undisguised goal was to make the big leap. The biggest claim, the signing of Érika de Souza, a Brazilian international and champion in her day of both the Euroleague and the WNBA. At the age of 40, and after a career full of decorations, he wants to say goodbye to basketball in Alcantarilla. Alongside her, Rebeca Cotano and Alejandra Sánchez from San Javier move on from the promotional block.

Today will be a special night for them, all their teammates, Alcantarilla and all Murcian basketball. “It’s a dream for everyone,” said Juan Carlos Hernández, president of the Murcia Region Basketball Federation. “It is a great pride to host the best female basketball players in our community.” How could it be otherwise, you will not miss “the great welcome to the Endesa Women’s League”.

Hernández extends this pride of the Hozono Global Jairis to Murcian basketball with the endorsement of Salva Costa, who sees in his team’s progress “the representation of women’s basketball in the region of Murcia in the highest tier.” An adventure that today in Alcantarilla will become “a historic day for the club, the municipality and the entire Murcian basketball”, and which will serve as a mirror for so many young people who “will have a reference with which to be inspired to achieve their goals “.

A few hours after the ball flies to Fausto Vicent’s roof, the tingling increases. “We are looking forward to and with great enthusiasm we are shaking with this first game at home,” said Costa, who feels “the support of all neighbours, organizations and political representatives, the Alcantarilla City Council is making a very great effort.”

Today, at 8pm, there is a party in the Fausto Vicent Pavilion and, as with all mass parties, “someone is always sneaking in.” Tonight it is the Bembibre from León, which comes out under the name Embutidos Pajariel. That the endless incentives can exert pressure, the Jairis coach, Lucas Fernández, rules out, as “doing well is something the team always wants”, although playing at home is “super motivating”.

The sewage team, which has been reinforced with big names such as the international Belén Arrojo, the promising Claudia Contell (on loan from Valencia and just the Under-20 Eurobasket MVP) and proven names such as Tamara Seda, Maria Bettencourt o Lashann Higgs, among others, comes today to the clash after his first defeat, Wednesday in Gran Canaria (64-56). The first since Lucas Fernández is his coach. The man from La Mancha arrived midway through last season to replace Víctor Verdú, who was struggling with health problems and had won everything so far.

As historic as today’s nomination is, Fernandez does not lose sight of the fact that “there will not be a single party that is not super important.” And while he rules out talking about direct rivals, the Polish say Bembibre is. The Murcians are the newly promoted and the Leonese, a team that was saved at the last minute last season. Just in case there is no incentive before the ball bounces in the first women’s match at the highest national level in the Region of Murcia.

The Hozono Global Jairis leaves nothing to chance to prepare a gala atmosphere for the first match in the Endesa Women’s League, to be played tonight at the Fausto Vicent de Alcantarilla Pavilion. With 68 years of history, Murcian basketball began to roll with him, and for such an illustrious moment, Jairis will debut a commemorative kit with more than 1,600 names engraved, those of all those people who have been part of the club since its foundation, 1954.

This kit will be its third this season, but Lucas Fernández’s will wear it today for the first home game.
