The Guevara Revolution

Date:

Heir to the Balearic School of Jorge Lorenzo and a fan of Marc Márquez, whom he considers a benchmark, Izan Guevara is the last World Champion produced by the prolific Spanish Motorcycle Academy

Izan Guevara (28-06-2004, Palma de Mallorca) has added his 56th world title to Spanish motorcycling. The Balearic becomes the 23rd pilot to become champion. A totally erratic number for a pilot known in the paddock as “Jordan”, exactly the 23rd most famous in history. It’s not that the young Balearic pilot idolizes the NBA legend, the nickname is given to him by his clothes, since he is crazy about sneakers and the brand “Air”, based on the figure of the American myth.

His passion for two wheels was born very young. When he was only two years old, Izan Guevara received a Christmas present that would change his life. An electric minibike with which he started dreaming of becoming a professional pilot one day. Like any kid his age, he tried football, but when he went to training camp, he was always more aware of the bikes parked than the balls. And at home he fantasized that one day he would become like Marc Márquez when you saw the races on television with his father Toni. For Izan, Márquez became his idol and role model since he was a child, and today the two have a good relationship and, in addition to the talent to go fast on a motorcycle, share an outgoing character and an innate charisma.

When the motorcycling thing became more than a whim, his parents enrolled him in the pilot school of Chicho Lorenzo, Jorge Lorenzo’s father, in Mallorca. He was there for several years and coincided with other pilots of the country, such as Joan Mir or Augusto Fernández. Then he ran his first races on the island and attracted the attention of the Balearic Federation, of which he became a part when he was only six years old. His results allowed him to access federation scholarships that allowed him to grow in a sport that requires significant financial support. The next step came in the prestigious Cradle of Champions, where most of the Valencian youth academy pilots are trained. There he coincided, among others, with Pedro Acosta, a pilot of his generation with whom he has dealt so often (and those who still are) and who manages to become the winners of the small category.

His first major international success came in the 2019 European Talent Cup, a single-brand continental cup that serves as a prelude to the World Cup. In a category where all riders compete on the same mechanics and where chaos always reigns due to extreme equality, he signed a string of six consecutive wins that would make his name ring in the MotoGP paddock. It was then that Jorge Martínez Aspar crossed his path, who signed him for his award-winning team. The Valencian manager’s intention was for him to gain two years of experience in the Junior World Cup before making the final jump to the World Cup.

The plan was perfectly laid out, but young Izan was in charge of speeding up the process. And it is that he rang the bell in his first year in the Junior World Cup by winning the title against the favorites (today the World Cup players like him) Xavi Artigas and Pedro Acosta. It was impossible to keep a talent like Guevara for another year and the Valencian team made a place for him in their squad last year. His rookie season in the Moto3 World Championship was brilliant, finishing eighth overall and winning a race in Austin, but in a way it was overshadowed by the explosion of the “acosta phenomenon”, a rookie like him who won first the title.

Looking ahead to 2022, the goal was to be among the elite of the category, regularly be on the podium and compete with the best. Said and done: Six wins, eleven podiums, two fastest laps and four pole positions sum up a perfect season, culminating in Phillip Island. In the mythical Australian circuit, Izan Guevara has been proclaimed Moto3 World Champion from the top of the podium, as the greatest does, and at 18 years and 110 days has become the fifth youngest champion in history, behind only Loris Capirossi, Pedro Acosta, Marc Marquez and Dani Pedrosa. The Guevara Revolution has only just begun.
