Joey Logano became the first driver to advance in a NASCAR championship race after overtaking Ross Chastain three laps to get in Las Vegas and win the South Point 400 this Sunday.
The win, Logano’s third of 2022 and third in Las Vegas, made him the first driver to qualify for the Cup championship at Phoenix Raceway on Nov. 6. Putting on new tires, a decision by Logano crew chief Paul Wolfe, became the winning strategy.
“We have the team to do it. I don’t see why we can’t win the championship,” said Logano. After Chastain Kyle Busch, Chase Briscoe and Denny Hamlin they completed the top five spots.
The first caution of the race occurred when Busch lost control of his No. 18 Toyota in Turn 4 in one round. Wallace moved into the lead, but then collided with Kyle Larson on lap 95, forcing him to retire and causing Wallace to push his rival several times.
Blaney took the lead, leading 39 laps. However, he hit the wall with forty more. Thus, he finished twenty-eighth and relinquished a lead that Chastain had assumed. However, Logano overtook him with three laps to go to take the win.
