Amnesty reiterated that Qatar must comply with labor reforms

International Amnesty (AI) now reiterated that the authorities of taste labor reforms still need to be followed and implemented to guarantee the rights of migrant workers, as he asked the country and the FIFA to establish a compensation fund for employees who have suffered abuse.

The NGOs said in a statement that “abuses remain widespread throughout the country” despite the reform package implemented in taste to improve conditions for “hundreds of thousands” of migrant workers who participated in the construction of stadiums and facilities for World Cup.

Also, he acknowledged that these reforms, which include, among others, a minimum wage and the end of the employers’ protection system, “brought about some remarkable improvements for the two million migrant workers in country.”

However, he pointed out that the lack of implementation of these reforms “continues to weaken the impact of these improvements” on migrants, because “thousands of people working in all projects (of world) continues to face problems.

Among them, he highlighted delays or non-payment of wages, denial of rest days, unsafe working conditions, barriers to changing jobs and limited access to justice.

He also emphasized that “the deaths of thousands of workers remain uninvestigated.”

In this sense, Amnesty recalled that last May there were many NGOs, Fans and unions have launched a campaign to question the FIFA and to the Qatari authorities “the establishment of a compensation program to compensate the working population and prevent future abuses.”

This campaign received the support of other football associations, such as Belgian, French, English, German and Dutch, but even so, AI denounced that “taste and the FIFA is still not giving up” and that “time is running out for him to do the right thing.

In this sense, the NGOs again urged the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) so that “it has a public gesture in defense of human rights in Qatar, not only of migrant workers, but of all people”, such as the persecuted LGBT community in this Arab country.

The government of taste It says a fund was established in 2018 to provide payments to employees when a company becomes insolvent and, by the end of 2021, almost €160 million has been paid to more than 36,000 workers.
