Thirteen months later the Swiss Stanislas Wawrinkaholds three Grand Slam titles and became the third player in the world, back in competition, to Monte Carlo Masters 1000, where he lost in the first round against the Kazakh Alexander Bublik.
The 37-year-old tennis player from Lausanne underwent surgery twice in 2021 and only picked up a racket on March 28 to play the Marbella Challenger. He lost to Elias Ymer of Sweden.
Monte Carlo, which he won in 2014 after beating his compatriot Roger Federer, was his first tournament on the circuit after more than a year away from the courts. Invited for the third Masters 1000 of the course, the Swiss, who has held sixteen trophies throughout his career, fell before the strength shown by Bublik, who achieved his first victory in this event.
The Kazakh won by 3-6, 7-5 and 6-2 to an opponent who continued to type to the end and whose strength could not cope.
Wawrinka did not resist the demand imposed by her talent at first, although she refused as the minutes passed until she was overtaken by a rival she had never met.
He stayed on the Wawrinka track for two hours and eight minutes on his thirteenth appearance at the Monte Carlo Masters 1000.
He couldn’t beat Bublik, 36 in the world and winner this season in Montpellier. For the first time in his career, he will play in the second round of this competition. The winner of the clash between Spaniard Pablo Carreño and Argentine Sebastián Báez will be measured.
