The Dutchman, who certified his second World Cup in Japan, records a victory at the Circuit of the Americas
The United States Grand Prix came into the battle for the title with everything decided after Max Verstappen certified his second World Championship at the final appointment in Japan. But that did not stop the Dutchman, who took his thirteenth victory of the season at the Circuit of the Americas. A triumph that, along with his teammate Sergio Pérez’s fourth place, gave Red Bull the Constructors’ Championship, the fifth in its record, revealed just the day after the founder’s death.
Verstappen’s victory allowed the Dutchman to match the numbers of Sebastian Vettel (2013) and Michel Schumacher (2004) and with them became the Formula 1 driver with the most wins in a year. The day could have been round if Russell hadn’t taken away the fastest lap on American soil.
The negative note was set by Carlos Sainz, who took pole on Saturday and had to leave after Russell kicked him out in the first corner. But it wasn’t all bad news for Ferrari, who saw Charles Leclerc cross the finish line third to take the podium. Second place went to British driver Lewis Hamilton in a test in which the safety car appeared twice.
Fernando Alonso also gave a good feeling, who managed to secure seventh place despite an accident and moved up to seven positions after starting from fourteenth place. Worse was his Alpine team-mate, Esteban Ocon, who finished outside the points.
