Although heroic Fabio Quartararo managed to delay Pecco Bagnaia’s run up to Cheste on November 6, despite competing in the Sepang race with a fractured base of his middle finger on his left hand, the Yamaha leader had to undergo surgery to repair the season-ending injury at the Cheste test in November 8, two days after the conclusion of the 2022 championship.
Last Saturday in FP4 at Sepang, Fabio Quartararo had a bad crash. After passing the examination of Dr. Charte, found a small fracture in his middle finger and applied ice they were able to complete the day on Saturday, including qualifying. After rest and intensive treatment he was able to line up on Sunday’s race to take his best result in the last six races, third and upset the Bagnaia match-ball.
This Tuesday Quartararo underwent an examination in Nice with his trusted doctor and they recommended an intervention to repair the bone. In the final race of the championship, his only option to retain the crown was to win the race and for Bagnaia to score less than two points (14th or worse).
Joan Mir also has compartment syndrome
Another MotoGP world champion with pending intervention when the winter break begins is Joan Mir that Sepang suffered a severe episode of compartment syndrome that ended his career in 19th after fighting in the top-5.
“I suffered compartment syndrome in my right arm from the middle of the race. I lost all my strength and feeling, I couldn’t brake. It’s something that can happen on this circuit, but it never happened to me before. Stopping I wish I was. I want to see a doctor to prevent this from happening again. I will not let this happen. I would seriously consider winter surgery“Joan recounted at the end of the race.
