The Monegasque Pilot Charles Leclerc, of the Ferrari team, admitted this Thursday that although his sport, Formula One, consists of driving as fast as possible, outside of it, They haven’t given him a speeding ticket yet.
“I was fined once, but never for breaking the speed limit. As a street driver I am a normal person, as well as a person, an average 25-year-old man“, assured in an interview with EFE.
Leclerc occupies second place in the drivers’ standings for the 2022 season, with 267 points, two ahead of Mexican Sergio ‘Checo’ Pérez, from Red Bull, who will join him next Sunday in the highly anticipated rivalry in Mexican Grand Prix.
Although the one from Monaco and the other from Guadalajara are the two candidates to finish in second place of the season, behind the champion Max Verstappen, from the Netherlands, Leclerc showed a lack of interest in his status among the standing of the drivers.
“I am not focused on the second place of the season, but on doing well as a team to find the championship next year.; that is the most important thing for me. I will try to run the three remaining races in the best possible way to grow in Ferrari’s thinking about 2023,” he said.
This year Leclerc won three races, Bahrain, Australia and Austriaand also had four second places and three third places, including one in Austin last weekend, when he beat ‘Checo’ Pérez, fourth.
“A new dispute with “Checo” in Mexico City would be nice. We had a good match last weekend in Austin and I see there might be another good one here. Red Bull is a competitive team and we will need to do everything perfectly.”
Monaco driver and Spaniard Carlos Sainz put Ferarri in second place in the constructors’ standings, 53 points ahead of Mercedes.
“We had growth from last year to this year; I hope Carlos and I win the world championship in our next match,” he insisted.
Charles admitted he was excited to drive his car on Sunday in Mexico City, 2,240 meters above sea level.
“It was a good race, the track is special. Because of the altitude above the sea, the car slides more and the driving style is different from what we usually have in the rest of the season. I am excited, though I won’ I can’t talk about my expectations until I pass the first exercises,” he added.
In good spirits a few hours before appearing at the Hermanos Rodríguez Autodrome in the capital of Mexico, in an interview with EFE Leclerc assured that it is possible to become world champion next yearbut he doesn’t think about the future because he is distracted by work now.
“Being a world champion is something that can happen, I will do my best with the team to try to achieve that goal; however, I cannot predict the future. What I will do is work 100 percent to achieve the big goal in as soon as possible”.
Season review for Ferrari, Leclerc commented that there was a jump in quality compared to the previous twobut there are still things pending to beat Red Bull.
“To be world champion we need to raise the performance every Sunday and better manage strategy and communication. We had engine problems at the beginning of the year, if we can solve those things together in the team we will have a lot opportunities,” he said.
Although he considers himself competitive, the second driver of Formula One in 2022, he believes that the main thing is to enjoy the races.
“I never forget that my job is to do what I love the most; Really enjoying what I do is the most important thing for me,” he said.
Although he does not speak Spanish, Leclerc agreed to send a message in Spanish to Mexicans, who this weekend will see him as a villain as he faces Pérez, the local hero.
“I say to the Mexicans, thank you for the love and apologies because I will try to beat ‘Checo’ Pérez“, he concluded.
