The President of FIFA, Giani Infantinosaid Thursday that he has a “clear conflict of interest” regarding women’s soccer, because he is the father of four daughters and if he doesn’t support women he can’t “go home at night.”
“I have to declare a clear conflict of interest: I am the father of four daughters, so if I don’t support everything that has to do with women, I can’t go home at night,” said Infantino, who immediately added: “All jokes aside (women’s football), it’s very important.”
The FIFA president made these remarks in a short virtual speech at the ‘Future Investment Initiative’ (FII), known as “Desert Davos”, held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Asked about the impact of women’s football, she was excited about the next World Cup in 2023, to be played in Australia and New Zealand, and celebrated that “women’s sports are growing globally”.
“The Women’s World Cup moves around the world,” said Infantino, recalling that at the last World Cup event in 2019 in France there were one million attendees and 1.2 billion people followed the tournament on television.
He also celebrated the steps taken in some countries to promote women’s sports, such as the case, he said, in Saudi Arabia, where this year the first national women’s league was held, something he described as “absolutely which is incredible.”
In this regard, she encouraged other countries to take the same steps and called for more global investment in women’s football.
