Carlos Sainz will have a difficult ballot on Mexican F1 GP. It comes from achieving pole in Austinbut suffered another stroke of bad luck by leaving the first corner in Texas when he was hit George Russell. A week later, the Spaniard was not due to fight for a new pole due to the more likely penalty he had to take for an engine change.
Ferrari gave Charles Leclerc a new combustion engine in Austin which serves for Italians to taste their reliability improvements for the 2023 academic year. Its engine reliability has been one of Ferrari’s acknowledged problems this season and the Maranello team has so far been unable to exploit its engine’s full potential. ANDIn Austin, Leclerc brought this new engine, with a new valve design that increased its reliabilityand therefore work on more aggressive maps to get the most out of the Italian power unit.
After this first test with Leclerc’s car, Ferrari should choose to put this engine to Sainz this weekend, something that will earn him a 5-place grid penalty Sunday (or more places if you trade other items as well).
Ferrari therefore seeks to accumulate as many kilometers as possible with these two engines in the three remaining races in order to find a design problem (if any) that must be resolved before continuing with the steps forward in front of 2023.
