Carlos Sainz unable to complete the desired qualifying session at Saudi Arabian GP in Jeddah. The Madrid rider finished 5th in his Ferrari, but the penalty of 10 positions that Leclerc has for tomorrow’s grid (which is 2nd) has given him another place and the Spaniard will start this Sunday from fourth position. Carlos admitted it wasn’t a good qualifying, turning around as Q2 had to use an extra set of new soft tires after making a mistake in the first sector of his first lap.
He was forced to come out again and play his pass in Q3 ‘in extremis’, in a letter. So, he lost a new set of soft tires for Q3 and only had one attempt. He failed when trying to push more than necessary in the first sector and finally 4th. However, Carlos is optimistic about his car’s performance in the race and believes he can at least fight for the podium by overtaking George Russell, who will start 3rd in his Mercedes.
“It hasn’t been a good quality. Since Q2 I’ve had to use two new sets of wheels because of a mistake I made in the first sector, Q3 has probably also cost me, not able to go with two new sets in Q3, would have helped”commented the Spanish driver on ‘DAZN F1’.
“In the Q3 lap I tried to push a little more in the first sector, I made a mistake and I lost 3 or 4 tenths of a second, which in the end was very important,” he added, however optimistic about the race: “The good thing is that the race is open, that now, even if we don’t have a day, we can come back. I think we have the speed to pass Russell and fight for the podium, that’s what we’ll go”.
The Spaniard from Ferrari also emphasized how tight this place is for the Red Bull chasers, an all-out battle between Aston Martin, Mercedes and Ferrari: “Of course, if you don’t understand the tire well, in first sector, the heat. -up, used, new, preparation lap or not… you lose those two or three tenths which are three more expensive positions than last year and you have to be careful”.
“But the good thing is that the race is open and we can come back”finished
