The number one in the world, Iga Swiatekhe said he was confused afterwards Simona Halep has received a provisional ban for doping and hopes there will be more clarity in the future about a Romanian player he admired.
The two-time Grand Slam winner Halep was temporarily suspended by the International Tennis Integrity Agency this month after testing positive for a banned blood stimulant roxadustat. Halep was tested during the US Open and her A and B samples confirmed the presence of an anti-anemia drug that stimulates the production of red blood cells, as well as the banned substance Erythropoietin.
“It was confusing for me because I did not expect to hear this news. Simona, from my point of view, seems like someone who always cares about fairness and is a good example for me”, Swiatek said before the WTA Finals in Fort Worth.
Polish admits not knowing what will happen. “I don’t know how the protocol works… Is it going to be tested a couple more times or whatever? I hope it becomes clearer to everyone,” Swiatek added. “You feel really bad. From my point of view, the most important thing for me is to take care of myself, to always be safe, make my environment safer and be careful. So we will do that,” No. 1 said.
