Jake Paul won a unanimous decision against former UFC star Anderson Silva this Saturday, giving the YouTuber-turned-boxer a shot at gaining credibility in the sport.
The entertaining fight lasted eight rounds and the last was at a good level, with a vicious right hand from Paul (6-0) sent Silva to the canvas. Silva was able to continue and land a few more shots in the final minute, but it wasn’t enough to convince the judges.
The fight played out at a slow pace, as Silva rarely threw punches in the first round, but the Brazilian landed some hard shots in the second, dancing around the ring as he avoided harder ones. Paul punched. The two fighters exchanged some taunts at first, but bravado gave way to concentration as they both realized this was going to be a long fight.
Paul stood his ground in the middle of the rounds, with blood pouring from Silva’s nose, but unable to land most of his powerful punches. This began to change in the later rounds, as the young Paul gained confidence and the punches began to find their way.
It was a show in front of more than 14,000 fans that mixed boxing and all kinds of celebrities, but the main attraction was Paul, 25, who showed amazing skills in the ring. He’s also an expert at self-promotion, riding his horse to open practice on Wednesday and walking into the Desert Diamond Arena on Saturday with two people in giant Transformers-like suits trailing behind him.
Silva (3-2) is a fan favorite and received loud cheers as he entered the ring. The 47-year-old fighter built his fame as a UFC star, but took up boxing and returned to the sport in 2020. Paul and Silva’s eight-round catchweight bout is on a card that includes the former NFL running back who fought Le’Veon Bell recently. retired UFC veteran Uriah Hall along with a popular YouTube primary care doctor named Doctor Mike took on former MMA fighter Chris Avila.
