A request from Neos shows: Ammunition is always lost in the Tyrolean management. There has even been a Glock at the bottom of the Achensee for eleven years. The background is a deadly drama from 2011.
The Neos have asked parliament about the loss of arms and ammunition by Austrian police officers since 2010. The answer from ÖVP Interior Minister Gerhard Karner also provides interesting details about Tyrol. The executive branch in this country has lost a total of 112 cartridges with a caliber of 9×19 millimeters in the past twelve years. The response also states when the deadly ammunition was lost, which agency was involved, and what disciplinary action was taken.
The most recent loss was not too long ago. On June 1, this year, the state transport service lost 16 cartridges.
48 cartridges were lost in 2016
Shortly before Christmas, on December 19, 2017, the state police headquarters had to mourn the loss of 16 cartridges. The year 2016 is striking, however. In this year, 16 cartridges each were lost three times. The Landeck district police were hit on July 7, the Innsbruck-Land district police on March 14 and the state transport department on February 1. In all five cases, the deadly ammunition has never been found to this day.
The officers were lucky, as no disciplinary action was taken and no compensation was sought.
At Drama Glock landed on the bottom of the Achensee
The “Tiroler Krone” also wanted to know more about the circumstances and background of the losses. However, the Tyrolean police news agency did not provide any answers. The circumstances are only available for the greatest loss. Because on March 30, 2011, the Flight Operations Center lost a Glock 17, two magazines and 32 cartridges. The reason: As reported, a police helicopter crashed into Lake Achensee during a surveillance flight as part of the “Schengen Compensatory Measures”. The tragic accident claimed four lives at the time.
The Glock has never reappeared to this day and is probably still rusting away at the bottom of the Achensee.
