Wales are considering changing their name after the World Cup!

Date:

Can a selection be renamed? That’s what I would consider Welsh after the dispute of Qatar World Cup which starts on November 20.

According to the Daily Mail, the welsh football federation Formal talks have begun with UEFA to address the issue and rename its national teams Cymruwhich means Wales in Welsh.

Noel Mooney, executive president of the Federation, explained why they are considering changing their name. “Our vision at the moment is that we call Cymru across the country. This is how we name our national teams. If you look at our website, we refer to ourselves as Cymru. Globally, we feel that there should more to do, so we’re going to the World Cup as Wales.”

The decision of Welsh motivated after what happened in the draw for the qualifying groups for Euro 2024, where Bale and the company team fell with Turkey.

Turks compete in the name of turkish after the Ankara government demanded that the country be recognized internationally by its name in the official language. A similar case is Azerbaijan, which also competes with its official language name.

In fact, Welsh already use a name Cymru in its official communications, as well as on its website.

“But I think 2023 will be a year where we will have a good discussion with all the different stakeholders, be it governments, our own boards, councils and decision-making bodies, staff, clubs and players. We are a very open democratic organisation. And now we have not unilaterally decided to do something like this,” added Mooney.
