Carlos Alcaraz, world number one, played down the problems he is dealing with with his knee, calling it “normal” for a season finale and insisting that among the favorites for the Paris Masters is his executioner in Basel, the Canadian. Felix Auger-Aliassime, which he sees as “incurable”.
“I feel good, at the end of the season, physical problems appear and it’s normal, you have to face them and show the best version,” Alcaraz said in a press conference before his debut on Wednesday in Paris-Bercy against the Japanese. Yoshihito Nishioka.
The Spaniard pointed out that “at the end of the season all players have physical problems” and insisted that in his case “it was nothing serious.”
Among the favorites for this tournament, where Alcaraz was eliminated last year in the round of 16 by Frenchman Hugo Gaston, he mentioned Novak Djokovic, Rafa Nadal, Daniil Medvedev and Felix Auger-Aliassime.
“Felix is tough, although there are many other players who could have won this tournament, I’m obviously not removing myself from that list,” he said with a smile.
Finishing as world number one in 2022 is not keeping him awake, the Spanish tennis player assured.
“There are other good players who have a chance to overtake me (in the standings), I don’t take it as pressure, but as an incentive to show better tennis and continue to grow,” he said.
Alcaraz stated that success came “very quickly, faster than I expected” in his career, but he made it clear that it did not change his relationship with his family, team and friends.
“Let’s say that I lead my normal life, although my relationship with the fans and the media has changed,” he concluded.
