The big challenge for swimmers and mountain runners

Date:

Swin run. Mateo Pesquer and Myriam Romero win the Cabo de Palos-Mediterranean Coast event and are declared regional champions of this triathlon discipline

Athletes passionate about open water swimming and racing in natural spaces have found their place in swinrun, a triathlon modality that already has regional champions. They are Myriam Romero and Mateo Pesquer who were the best in Cabo de Palos Mediterranean coast. The athlete of the Trialhama New Garden Club and the member of the Mandarache Athletics Club were the first Murcian federations to cross the finish line.

The Swimrun Cabo de Palos – Mediterranean Coast covered two distances. The ‘half’, which consisted of a total of 19.4 kilometers, and the ‘sprint’, 9.4. The former is the most common in swimrun competitions, with competitions ranging from about 10 to 12 miles, with some slightly longer swim sections and running races that can extend up to 4 miles.

In this modality, held in Cabo de Palos, the individual men’s podium consisted of Germán Rodríguez (independent), Pedro Barbudo (CN UCAM Fuensanta) and Raúl Campoy (Swimrun Lloret). In the female individual category, only two athletes took part, the winners were Elena Burruezo (Fuensanta Impulso UCAM Bitec) and Estibaliz Uriarte (Cafés Foronda Dida kirol taldea).

Unlike what happens in aquaathlon events, where the participants also swim and run, but cover shorter distances and pass through an area to change outfits, swinrun practitioners do not change their clothes.

They swim in running shoes and run in wetsuits. The distances vary, they can be 75 km or more. Running sections are combined with swimming sections. It is quite a challenge and a temptation for lovers of open water swimming and mountain racing.

The swinrun is not a trail race or open water race. In the summer of 2002, Swedish brothers Mats and Jesper Andersson were sitting with some friends in a bar overlooking the Stockholm archipelago. The napkins were printed with a map of the archipelago with all its islands. At some point in the evening someone thought that maybe that distance could be bridged by swimming from island to island and going from island to island. The total distance was 75 kilometers, of which 10 swam. Said and done. What started as betting in a bar has become one of the most popular sports today.
