The striker of DC United Taxi Fountain will not be sanctioned by Major League Soccer (MLS) after the league said an allegation that he used a racial slur toward the Miami defender was found to be credible Aime Mabika in a match on September 18, but could find no corroborating evidence.
The league said in a statement Monday that it was “unable to independently verify the allegation” but “found no credible statement by Fountas, made in interviews conducted as part of this investigation, that he did not say anything at the time, discrimination or otherwise. “The video of the incident clearly shows Mabika reacting suddenly to something he thought he heard from Fountas,” the league said.
“MLS has not been able to independently confirm, through additional witness accounts, video footage or audio recordings, what Fountas said at the time.” Fountas agreed to sit out the team’s last two games (October 1 and 9). The league said he is eligible to play for DC United next season. “MLS plans to review its policies and practices regarding reports of abusive and discriminatory language and is committed to working with all stakeholders during this off-season,” it warned.
