Scariolo keeps Spain’s doors wide open

Date:

Only five European champions remain in the 16-player roster for the next 2023 World Cup qualifiers

The national basketball coach, Sergio Scariolo, has announced the list of 16 players called up for the third and fourth rounds of the second qualifying phase for the 2023 World Cup. The Spanish team will meet Italy in the transalpine country on November 11 and three days later the Netherlands will receive at the Palacio de los Deportes Carolina Marín in Huelva.

These are the team’s first two matches after winning the gold medal at the Eurobasket. Only five players appear on the new list – Alberto Diaz, Joel Parra, Sebas Saiz, Darío Brizuela and Jaime Fernández – who managed to achieve glory in Germany last summer, leaving the doors of this revamped Spain wide open. The most important novelties are Pep Busquets and Eric Vila, who make their debut with the absolute.

Spain, leader of the group with five wins and one loss, will try to confirm its presence in the 2023 World Cup in this window, convincingly beating Iceland and the Netherlands in the last matches.

The players who are part of the call are the following:

Francis Alonso (Surne Bilbao Basket)

Jonathan Barreiro (Unicaja)

Ferran Bassas (Gran Canaria)

Dario Brizuela (Unicaja)

Pep Busquets (Young Badalona)

Alberto Diaz (Unicaja)

Jaime Fernandez (Lenovo Tenerife)

Ruben Guerrero (Monbus Obradoiro)

Juan Nunez (Ratiopharm Ulm)

Joel Parra (Joventut Badalona)

Sebas Saiz (Alvark Tokyo)

Miquel Salvo (Gran Canaria)

Yankuba Sima (Umana Reyer Venezia)

Edgar Vicedo (Monbus Obradoiro)

Eric Vila (Basket Girona)

Santi Yusta (Casademont Zaragoza)
