Russia coach Valeri Karpin has extended his contract until 2024, as announced this Saturday by the Russian Football Union (UFR). The Russian team has been expelled from the Qatar 2022 World Cup and from all FIFA international competitions as a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
“I thank the UFR for the offer to continue working with the Russian national team,” Karpin was quoted as saying by the press service of the Russian federation.
Karpin also thanked the management of the Rostov football club, which allows him to combine work with the head of the national team in the position of coach of said team, where he returned in March 2022.
“Even now, when the national team does not participate in official tournaments, the necessity of its existence is unquestionable. It is important to show that we are alive and ready to return to international competitions,” said the coach.
Karpin53 years old and former player of Celta, Real Sociedad and Valencia, among other teams, took over the Russian national team in July 2021. He replaced Stanislav Cherchesov, who was blamed for the failure of the Russian team at Euro 2020. Under the leadership of Karpin, the Russian national team played eight matches, of which they won six.
