Novak Djokovic Danish says it’s Sunday Holger Runewho beat him in the final of the Paris-Bercy Masters 1,000, and the Spanish Carlos Alcarazworld number one, “they are very complete players, with great strength on the court”.
Nole, 35, lost the Bercy final to Rune in three sets and in May he bowed out in Madrid to Alcaraz, also in three sets.
“They are similar physically, they are both very fit, they train very hard, they both defend very well, one (Holger) has a better backhand, another (Carlos), the forehand, and they are improving their shots,” he said.
Djokovic took stock of the lost final against the Dane and lamented some of the breakaway opportunities he squandered. “His fighting spirit of someone so young, his maturity, is impressive,” he stressed.
The Serb reiterated that Rune reminded him of his tennis beginnings and also highlighted “his amazing backhand” and his “competitive spirit”.
The winner of 21 majors said he was very satisfied with his level of tennis, despite Sunday’s loss.
“I feel very good, in high-level tennis (…) I have had a very good week anyway,” said Djokovic.
