The Mercedes driver explained that last year he dedicated his victory at Interlagos to Ayrton Senna because when he saw the Brazilian driver race, at the age of 5, he knew “that he wanted to be world champion”.

“Through their eyes, I learned the passion of Brazilians,” Hamilton said of Senna, who died in a racing accident in 1994.

In his speech, Hamilton also touched on the issue of racial equality and said he was “committed” to including blacks in his sport.

“As a black person in a sport that still has a lot of progress to make, I am committed to making this change. It inspires me when I come to Brazil and see such a diverse audience . We have to come together, be positive about our goals, never take no for an answer, never give up,” he said.

The British driver, seven times world champion, will participate next weekend in the Brazilian Grand Prix, at the Interlagos circuit in Sao Paulo.
