After evacuations – Ukraine: Russians want to loot houses in Kherson

Date:

In the war in Ukraine, the Russian-occupied city of Kherson is increasingly coming into the picture. Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podoliak accused Russian troops on Monday of initially forcing city dwellers to leave their homes. And now they would loot them: “Robbing those they wanted to ‘protect’ – the best illustration of the ‘Russian world’.”

The Ukrainian military also said Russian soldiers would occupy residential buildings disguised as civilians to better position themselves for street fighting. Russian journalists, in turn, are preparing to show videos falsely showing Ukrainian soldiers harming civilians.

Moscow: Evacuations continue
Russia initially did not comment on the allegations. The Ukrainian armed forces would concentrate their troops in Kherson, said deputy chief of administration Kirill Stremusov. The evacuation of the region continues. Above all, people who cannot walk themselves must be brought to safety. Sometimes there are power outages. The situation at the front was unchanged, Stremoussov said. Ukraine had repeatedly announced that it would liberate the city and region of Kherson.

Kherson is located in the south of Ukraine. It is the only regional capital that Russia has been able to capture since the invasion began on February 24. Before the war, about 300,000 people lived there. In recent days, Russia has ordered evacuations, ostensibly to protect civilians in anticipation of an imminent offensive by Ukraine to retake the city.

Power cut off
According to both warring parties, the city has been in darkness for the past 48 hours after power and water supplies to the surrounding area were cut. The government installed by Russia accused Ukraine of sabotage. Ukrainian officials, on the other hand, accused Russia of dismantling power cables. Electricity will probably not be available again until the area is back under control of Ukraine.

The situation in the city cannot be independently verified at the moment. The recapture of Kherson is one of the main objectives of the Ukrainian counter-offensive that began in October. In recent days, Ukraine has said a bitter struggle is to be expected. Russia has sent thousands of soldiers to Kherson as reinforcements. In recent days, however, there have also been indications that Russian troops could withdraw.
