Sergio ‘Kun’ Agüero believes that it is “very difficult for other countries” to play against the Argentina team. This is what the former Albiceleste striker said in an interview granted to FIFA and released this Tuesday with a view to the start of the 2022 Qatar World Cup.
Kun, who played three World Cups (South Africa 2010, Brazil 2014 and Russia 2018) with Argentina, recalled that, as a child, he discovered that the Albiceleste “were always among the favorites to win.”
“Over the course of the different World Cups, you realize that Argentina is always there, among the favorite teams. In my opinion, it is very difficult for other countries to play against Argentina,” explained Kun.
The passion for football reaches the schools
Retired from football since December 2021 due to heart problems during his short time at Barça, the former striker commented that the passion for football in Argentina is so great that “even schools have suspended their classes” and that, although “as a child you don’t understand much”, he knows that when the World Cup came “the whole country stopped”.
“Depending on the time of the match, the schools put up screens so that the boys can watch the World Cup. So, from childhood, the country shows their passion,” said Agüero, who recalled that the first match in World Cup that he saw was while in the class “with 5 or 6 years” (certainly in the United States 1994, since he was born in 1988).
Your dream, come true
Regarding his experience as a player in three World Cups, he stressed that “this is the best thing that can happen to a footballer”, because “every kid dreams of going to a World Cup, but not everyone has the chance”.
Agüero spoke about the “responsibility” of soccer players and fans to promote “respect for other cultures”, referring to the dispute at the next World Cup on Qatari soil, as happened in 2010 in South Africa, the first on African soil.
“I think we improve with every World Cup. Of course, it’s impossible to achieve perfection, but gradually people realize what different cultures are and we must respect them all,” said Agüero, who as in addition to Barça also played for Independiente, Athletic and Manchester City.
The 2022 Qatar World Cup will be held from November 20 to December 18 and, here, the Argentine team, led by Lionel Scaloni, has been drawn in group C, where they will face Saudi Arabia (November 22), Mexico (11/ 26). ) and Poland (11/30).
