Thierry Ndikumwenayo acquired Spanish nationality

Thierry Ndikumwenayo, 25-year-old athlete from Burundi belongs to the Playas de Castellón club and resident in Spain since 2016, has acquired Spanish nationality “by letter of naturalization” by virtue of the Royal Decree of the Ministry of Justice dated November 8 and published this Wednesday in the Official State Gazette.

“At the proposal of the Minister of Justice (María Pilar Llop), due to the extraordinary circumstances that happened to Mr. Thierry Ndikumwenayo, and after the deliberation of the Council of Ministers at its meeting on November 8, 2022, I give it Spanish nationality by letter of nature to Mr. Thierry Ndikumwenayo who has common law civil residence”, the Royal Decree said.

The resolution added that the concession “shall give effect to the requirements, conditions and rules set forth in the civil code.” The athlete, a world elite long distance runner, He will still need to complete some paperwork and accept a “transfer” from World Athletics before he can represent Spain.

Ndikumwenoyo lived the first five years of his Spanish stay in Alicante and the last two in Castellón, were awarded a scholarship by the Diputación of this province.

His victory in the 3,000-meter race of the Monaco Diamond League, on August 10, with a time of 7:25.93 (the best in the world this year and seventh all-time), made his name famous among the elite of the fund of world, although he used to get good results in international competitions.

In 2014, Ndikumwenayo won his first international medal at the Nanjing Youth Olympics (China), a silver in the 3,000 meters.

In 2017, at the age of 20, he was part of the senior Ugandan team that competed at the World Cross Country Championships in Kampala. (he finished in 95th place). Two years later, he got the ninth in Aarhus (Denmark), after winning the Cross of the Constitution in Alcobendas (Madrid).

In addition to 7:25.93 in the 3,000 meters, Ndikumwenoyo has other outstanding personal bests: 3:37.25 in the 1,500, 12:59.39 in the 5,000 and 28:04 in the 10K.
