Solidarity gesture of the ‘Oranje’ team in Qatar

Date:

The jerseys that the Netherlands team will wear at the World Cup will be auctioned to support migrant workers in Qatar, the Netherlands Football Federation (KNVB) announced today.

This body has distinguished itself in recent months for criticizing the violation of human rights and working conditions in Qatar, where immigrant workers and foreigners make up the majority of the 2.8 million inhabitants.

After consulting the players, the KNVB decided that the proceeds from the online auction would go towards improving the situation of migrant workers.

Captain Van Dijk reasons

“Nobody knew that the preparation for the tournament had a big impact on the migrant workers in Qatar,” said Oranje team captain Virgil van Dijk.

“They worked on stadiums, infrastructure and hotel accommodation in very difficult conditions. We will remember this throughout our stay there. It is clear to everyone that these conditions really need to be improved,” underlined the Liverpool center-back.

“We hope that our presence will help the changes that are currently taking place,” hopes Van Dijk. “Much has been done from the tables to improve the condition of migrant workers. But we also want to make a concrete contribution from the dressing room”.

Invited to training

The Netherlands team, led by Louis van Gaal, will also meet in Qatar with around twenty immigrants to discuss their working conditions and give them the opportunity to participate in team training.
