Dondela Football Club have confirmed that coach Niall Carey has signed a new contract with the club.

Corey – who was appointed coach in September last year – has agreed to a deal that he will stay at Wilgar Park for the next two seasons.

When he replaced Colin Nixon in the hot seat seven months ago, Dondela reached the bottom of the league and finished with just one point from seven Premier League games.

They are currently eighth in the standings and have just gained confidence in the second tier.

“Niall and his staff have come to the club at a difficult time when Dondela is at the bottom of League One,” Dondela said in a statement.

“The excellent turnaround under Niall and his staff has shown that Dondela has gone from relegation to certainty of securing the Premier League next season with four games remaining and climbing to eighth place.

“We look forward to the exciting moments that lie ahead at Dundela.”

Corrie thanked his players and the club, after last Saturday’s draw with Ard, which secured the league title for another season.

He said on Facebook: “Thank you to all players for purchasing what Cliff and John wanted me to carry.

“After a poor start, the players scored 43 points in 26 games. Looking at where we’ve been, I’m very proud to establish our position in League One today. We are now focused on a good season finale and looking forward to the next real push.

“Thanks to the board for the support and even more to the players who owe it to themselves and the club, it seemed unlikely, but we made it happen.”
